What is the otitis media?

Otitis media is an inflammation of the middle ear without reference to etiology
The most common disease of childhood .most patients of children are between age of 6 month and 5to 6 years

There are two types of otitis media -
1.    A cute otitis media : Rapid onset of symptoms the disease last for nearly 20 days
2.    Chronic otitis media Middle ear effusion that persists nearly 3 months

Causes of otitis media
 Causative agent :The most common causative organism is streptococcus pneumonia and haemophilus influenza
·        Allergy
·        Autoimmune
·        Genetic
·        Changing in climate
·        Artificial feeding – feeding and drinking while lying down in children  
·        Environmental factors
·        None infectious type is always result of blocked Eustachian tubes from edema of upper respiratory infection

Symptoms
·        Fever
·        Purulent discharge
·        Upper respiratory tract infection
·        In children
·        Crying
·        Rolling head from side to side
·        Lethargy
·        Loss of appetite
·        Ear pain
·        Neck pain
·        Vomiting and nausea
·        In chronic otitis media and sever may occur : Hearing loss – vertigo – Difficulty in communication

Nursing care plan for otitis media

(1)  Nursing diagnosis
Pain related to pressure caused by inflammatory process
Nursing goal
Patient will have no pain or reduce patient pain
Nursing interventions
1- Apply heating pad under the affected ear where child lies over it to reduce ear pain this position allow ear drainage of exudate if ear drum ruptured  
2- Apply cold compressor over the affected ear between the attacks of pain this will reduce edema of ear
3- Give patient analgesics as physician order to reduce pain
4- Put patient in comfortable position
5- use relaxation techniques to distract patient to reduce pain
(2) Nursing diagnosis
Risk for skin integrity related to drainage of ear
Nursing goal: Maintaining skin normal
Nursing intervention
1- Clean external ear canal with sterile cotton if it is draining

Nursing interventions
1- Educated parents how to take care of their child
2- Educate parents complication of otitis media that occur if he don't take medication such as hearing loss and perforated drum
Expected out come
Family demonstrate the ability to take care of their child
