In the beginning  what is thalassemia 
  thalassemia  syndromes defined as group of usually inherited chronic disorder characterized by an absence or decreases synthesis of one the normal globin chains of hemoglobin   
thalassemia consists of two types which are caused by a decrease in alpha and beta chain

type 1 thalassemia minor 

type B  thalassemia major 



Nursing care plane and intervention  for thalassemia


1-Nursing Diagnosis
Anxiety and fear related to diagnostic procedure and  blood transfusion 

Nursing Goal :

 The child family will become knowledgeable about the disease

Nursing intervention :
1- Explain the procedure not only for family but also to child.
2- explain the important of blood transfusion .
3- Remain  with the child during tests and during blood transfusion .

Expected outcome

The child and family have minimal anxiety ad\ns understand of disease and treatment



2-Nursing diagnosis

Management of therapeutic regimen individual effectively

Nursing Goal : The child will take his therapeutic effectively

Nursing intervention :
1- The nurse must administer transfusion therapy
2- the nurse administer chelation therapy
3- teach child and his parents the usage of chelation therapy and its side effect  which always be abdominal discomfort and mild diarrhea
4- Give adequate amount of vitamin C but give it not at mealtime because vitamin c increase absorption of iron

Expected outcome
The child receive his therapeutic management effectively.



3- Nursing diagnosis

Risk of infection due to anemia 

Nursing goal : The child will have no signs of infection.

Nursing Intervention :

The nurse must do the following
1-Isolate the child from all known sources of infection.
2- Monitor the child temperature every 4 hours , because elevate in temperature indicates infection.
3- Administer antibiotic as the physician order as prophylactic measure.
4-give patient high protein diet in small meal .
5- if he didn't received vaccines at younger administer vaccine especially Hemophilus b polysaccharide vaccine at age 18 months    .



4- Nursing diagnosis

Knowledge deficit related to disease and chelation therapy .

Nursing goal : Parents will verbalize an understanding of home care.

Nursing intervention : The nurse instruct and teach  the parents about the following

1- Signs and symptoms of the disease .
2- how to administration of the chelation therapy .
3- Importance of prevention of infection
4- Importance of administration of medication .
5- Importance of  not exposure to low oxygen environment like flying in unpressurized airplanes .
6- instruct parents about importance of follow up

Expected outcome :

Parents will understand of home care


5- Nursing diagnosis 

High risk for complication related to chelation therapy and splenectomy
